Sitting is the new smoking. That’s the phrase we commonly hear today. I don’t want to believe it, but there sure is a lot of evidence that supports it.
I was speaking with an Executive Assistant recently who said sitting all day had started to give her migraines. Her chiropractor gave her some simple strategies to help restore her posture and reverse the nerve damage in her neck which was causing the migraines. These were the chiropractors’ suggestions*:
- Use a lumbar pillow
- Keep your chest up
- Raise the top of your monitor slightly above your head
Simple yet rewarding. Her migraines went away and she had more energy throughout the day.
As assistants, we often have to sit at our desks near the phones for long periods of time. Sitting can cause all types of stress on our bodies. While seeing a chiropractor and getting personalized tips like these are some people’s solutions, other ways to alleviate the pain include standing desks, lunch-time yoga and acupuncture, to name a few. The point is, we don’t need to tolerate the pain associated with long hours of sitting. Find the right method to help you feel better. Your job and body will appreciate it.
